Coach Nate here, I want to share with you the four keys to sales success that I have learned in my 20+ years in the world of professional selling. Whether the economy is booming or in a recession, embody these principles and you will succeed in sales.
Key to Sales Success #1 – Courage
To succeed in sales, you need courage. It’s not easy to be in a job that doesn’t pay unless you perform. You have to be willing to take risks, to make cold calls, and to make sales presentations with minimal information. But if you have the courage to run with your eyes closed, to bump into things, and to pick yourself back up, then you can survive and thrive in sales.
Key to Sales Success #2– Discipline
Discipline is a foreign word to most salespeople. They prefer to do their own thing and don’t like to be controlled or held accountable. But successful salespeople know that success is more a result of planning than good luck. If you plan your work and work your plan, you have a much better chance of long-term success. Survivors know they have to do what other salespeople won’t do if they are to last in the profession.
Key to Sales Success #3 – Optimism
Optimism is the ability to keep going in the face of defeat. It’s the quality that separates the survivors from the quitters. If you have a positive mental attitude and the ability to carry on while others say “the heck with it,” then you can succeed in sales. Optimism has been proven to be a key factor in sales success. So stay positive, keep your chin up, and never give up.
Key to Sales Success #4 – Persistence
Persistence is the number one factor in many people’s sales success. You have to be like a postage stamp and stick to the job until it’s done. Successful salespeople know that it takes many calls to make a sale. They know that most sales are made after the fifth call and that most salespeople quit by the third call. But if you persist, if you keep going, if you stay the course, then you can succeed in sales.
Selling is NOT Easy
Selling is not for everyone. If selling was easy, everyone would be doing it. But not everyone has the personal qualities required to survive in sales. To succeed in the wonderful world of sales, you must have a strong belief in yourself, the courage and discipline to do what unsuccessful salespeople won’t do, and the ability to maintain a positive, optimistic mental attitude.
